You paid for insurance. But where is the money? You may have to fight for it.

The problem is that insurance companies make money by not giving you any. So to force their hand, you want as much proof as possible of the damage you suffered.

From my experience fighting with homeowners’ insurance companies, here are some tips where you can help yourself.

  • Make a claim with your insurance company as soon as you can and be sure to ask how long the process will take.
  • Take pictures both inside and out.
  • Make a list of contents.
  • Show you took steps to prevent further damage.
  • Do NOT throw things away until an insurance adjuster has evaluated them.

You have several things in your favor. First, we here in and around Mobile have experience dealing with the aftermath of high winds and flooding, so insurance companies know that lawyers will step in to make them do what is right. Second, Alabama law is strong in getting companies to do what they promise. Third, you can always let a jury of local people decide any dispute, and local people tend to favor the homeowner because they know what it is like to be in a similar situation.

If you need to fight your insurance company or suffer a personal injury like an auto accident or slip and fall, you can talk to us at the Law Firm of Eiland and Ritchie for free. We want to help you get back on your feet. We are working remotely mostly but are always available.

Also, join us on NBC 15 LawCall here in Mobile every Sunday night at 10:30 right after the news. We are taking a fall break and will offer 5-minute segments for the rest of the year and a live call-in segment every Monday on NBC 15 at around lunchtime.
