Should I Handle My Own Injury Case?

One of the questions I get most often is, “Can I just handle my case myself?” Well, you can. But you shouldn’t.

Now, it is true that I have been known to tell potential clients that the offer an insurance company has presented them is fair. In that case, they should take it and there is no need to hire us. It is also true that getting that fair offer on their own is very rare.

The number one reason I can generally get them more money, even after the lawyer fees, is that dealing with insurance companies is what I do. There are a lot of tricks that insurance companies play to keep their payments to you low. Sometimes you need a professional to take on a professional.

The number two reason is that experience lets me know where pots of money may be hiding. This is also why if you are injured you need a lawyer experienced in injury law.

Let me give you an example. A male construction worker was hit by a female nurse’s car. Her insurance had a maximum payout of $100,000, which her insurance company promptly offered. The worker’s brother went to his former divorce lawyer, and that lawyer suggested the injured man take it as the best offer out there. However, the injured worker came to another firm, and they investigated the case finding out the nurse was on her way to see a client when she hit the injured worker. That made her employer liable. The case was later settled for several million dollars.

There is nothing like experience.
