Signs of nursing home abuse and neglect

by | Jul 6, 2021 | Nursing Home Abuse & Neglect

Every year, hundreds of individuals experience nursing home abuse and neglect in Alabama. Unfortunately, emotional abuse and neglect isn’t always easy to spot, but there are some things that you can look for. Here are some of the most common signs of emotional abuse and neglect in nursing homes.

Humiliation

If your loved one is in a nursing home, you want to make sure that they get treated in the best way possible. This shouldn’t include them feeling humiliated. If you haven noticed that they sit in soiled clothes or that they get reprimanded in front of others, then this is a sign of nursing home abuse and neglect.

Yelling

No one should get yelled at in a nursing home. It isn’t okay for one of the staff members to yell at your loved one. They should treat all of the patients with dignity and respect at all times. If you have noticed that the nursing home staff yells at their patients, there’s a good chance that they are yelling at your loved one as well when you aren’t around.

Isolation

It’s not uncommon for staff at a nursing home to isolate patients as a form of abuse. Your loved one should be free to socialize with their friends throughout the day. If they are being locked in their room or not allowed to come out when they want to, this is a sign that abuse is occurring.

If you have noticed any of the signs mentioned above, you should act right away. Your loved one shouldn’t have to experience any type of emotional, verbal or physical abuse while they are in a nursing home. You may find it helpful to seek legal counsel to find out what options you have.
