Holiday Safety List, Checking It Twice

by | Nov 26, 2021 | Allen A. Ritchie

Decoration fires! Destructive toys! Deep fryer explosions! Happy holidays, everyone.

As a personal injury lawyer, I know things can hurt you. So, I am here to advocate that we all take a few precautions to prevent our holiday traditions from including a trip to the emergency room.

Here are 3 significant areas of concern as highlighted by the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC).

TOYS

Don’t scramble to grab any toy just because you fear the supply chain will prevent your kids from getting the item they want. Knockoffs are coming, and some of them are very unsafe.

By the way, the number one dangerous item is non-motorized scooters. They account for nearly a fourth of all toy-related emergency room injuries.

COOKING

If you survived Thanksgiving, you are halfway to a safe holiday. Thanksgiving is the number one day for cooking fires – 3 times more dangerous than any other day of the year. But fear of fire is not over; Christmas is coming.

Speaking of cooking, turkey fryers have caused nearly $10 million in damage since the CPSC started collecting data in 1998.

DECORATING

You know fire is a danger – dry Christmas trees, candles too near the curtains. However, of the roughly 15,000 holiday decorating injuries each year, half of those are from falling. Maybe the movie Christmas Vacation wasn’t that far from reality.

Be safe, friends. There are a lot of holiday activities to come.
