Men Dying While Texting and Walking

Text & walking

You know about the dangers of texting and driving. But now, you need to fear texting and walking … especially on a mountain … and especially if you are a male.

A new study caught my eye because men are falling off mountains while holding their phones. At best, you might think they are in danger and are searching for a solution. A YouTube video, perhaps? At the worst, they are reading their Facebook and just stepped off a cliff.

Now I admit the study is a bit iffy since it is based on data from a single Scottish ski resort, but the findings have the sound of truth.

Here, in a nutshell, are the results after looking at 7 years of data.

  • Of the mountain fatalities, only 10 of 114 were women
  • There was often phone use when the victims fell

One instructor says the men are more likely to download an app than take an ice pick or other safety equipment. She speculates that they think their skill is more developed than it is. Seems true to me.

Now I have seen some near accidents here in Mobile while someone is walking and texting, especially in parking lots. Though your chance of falling off a mountain may be less than in Scotland, you would be wise to take all the texting safety rules and put them to use while on foot.

As you probably know, it is illegal in Alabama to text and drive. Though the law-imposed fine is modest, you will get points on your driver’s license if convicted. More importantly, it can be a dangerous decision. If you stop looking at the highway for even a second, it can take your life or another person’s life. Must I mention, the same result as falling off an alp?

And let me add – having rescue workers bring your body off a mountain with your outstretched hand still looking at your cell phone is not how you want to be remembered.
